If you want hair color that pops, the trick is determining which shade will best complement your skin and eyes, according to Estelle Baumhauer, the Color Director at eSalon. This will give you the most flattering effect, and take years off your face!
Step 1: Skin tone
“First identify your skin tone, so that you can find the best hair color match for it,” says Estelle. The undertones in your skin determine your category:
You have warm skin if you can see golden or peach undertones in your skin.
You have cool skin if you have pink, blue, or beige undertones in your skin.
Here’s a quick trick for finding your skin tone: “Look at the veins on the inside of your arm under natural light,” says Estelle. “If the veins appear green, then you have a warm skin tone. If the veins appear blue, you have a cool skin tone.”
Step 2: Matching color
Now you can find your best hair color match. “In general, I use complementary colors for my eSalon clients’ hair. This blends natural tones without creating a harsh contrast, while covering gray hair for a flattering overall effect,” says Estelle. On the other hand, choosing an unflattering shade may bring out the wrong undertone in your skin and make you look sallow or orange!
Warm: In general, a cool hair color will look the most flattering and natural on you. Estelle suggests a color with violet, blue, or neutral tones to cool down your skin.
Cool: You’ll generally look best with a warm hair color. Estelle says golden or red tones work well to warm up your skin.
